carry the priest across the river.
"While I am carry you across the river, will you hear my confession?" said Tom. "I will" said the priest.
"Very well," said Tom. "Get up on my back" The priest did so and Tom proceeded to wade across the river. When they were in the middle of the river Tom told some terrible sins he committed to the priest. "The devil must be on you" said the priest. So Tom said "By ---- he will not be on me much long" He made an attempt to throw the priest in the river. The priest said "I'll forgive you this time but take me across" He didn't trouble Tom to ask how to take him (the priest) across the river on his return journey but waited till the flood had subsided and crossed by the ford.
