    Long ago the people had no candles like the candles that are used at present. The candles they used at that time were made of rushes. Those candles did not show much light and the people could not read or write at night.
    In order to make the candles they first went out and cut a bundle of the thickest rushes they could find. then they brought them in and all the skin was peeled off except one little little strip which was left on to keep it from breaking. Then they were hung up until they were quite dry. Then they were taken down and steeped in oil and were made ready for lighting.
    When the candles were made the people made nice candle sticks in which
