- St. Stephen's day is on the twenty-sixth of December. On that day a crowd of boys and girls go from house to house looking for money. They get false faces and put them on them and the boys turn their coats and the girls get long cloaks and wear them. They do this in order that the people of the houses which they entered would not know them. One of the boys brings some kind of a musical instrument with him. When they go in to a house one of them plays a tune while the others dance. When they are tired dancing they ask for money and say "the wren the wren the king of all birds, on New Year's day she was caught in the furze. Up with the kettle and down with the pan. Give us some money to bury the wren".When they get the money they give half of it to the person who was playing(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
