  1. Local Ruins
At the northern extremity of the town of Cluainin Uí Ruairc stand the ruins of an old castle once the property of Sir Frederick Hamilton, a Scotchman. About seven miles outside the town stands O'Rourkes castle of Breffney. Between O'Rourke and Hamilton bitter enmity existed because (O'Ro) Hamilton was always persecuting the Catholics and hanging Priests. One night O'Rourke attacked the castle while a banquet was going on and he defeated the Scotchman and burned the castle but he did not succeed in capturing the tyrant who escaped through an underground tunnel and he was never seen or heard of since. About four miles outside the town is the birthplace of the famous patriot Seán Mac Dermott who was killed in Dublin on account of the great part he took in the 1916 rebellion. There are also the ruins of an old Abbey belonged to St. Clare
