Home Districts. 3-5-'38
Meelick
Meelick is my home district. It is situated in the parish of Kiltullagh and in the (par) Barony of Castlerea. There are nine families there and about thirty five people also. Reynolds is the most common name in it. There are three kinds of houses there namely, thatched, tiled and slated. Meelick got its name from the lowlands that surround it.
There are four old people living in it all over seventy and some of ninety. some of them can tell stories in English, but none of them can tell any in Irish. There names are, Mrs Bridget Griffin, Mrs Mary G Reynolds, Mrs Mary Moylan, Mrs Margaret Hiskell from Meelick, Ballinlough County Roscommon. The houses are more numerous now than long ago. There are none of them in ruins. A few young people people went to America long ago and stayed there. Most of the men used to go to England for the Harvest and come back as Christmas drew near. Meelick is not mentioned in any song or story. There is a variety of land and bog in it. It is a little moory. There are no woods or lakes in it but i there is a river flowing between Galway and(continues on next page)- Collector
