    fork under the stalk with his foot. He lifts the stalk out and shakes the potatoes out of it. He throws the big potatoes into a vessel beside him. When the vessel is filled, he makes a pit for them between two claises. When the pit is long enough, the potatoes are covered with sedge, long grass of straw and then with a deep coat of clay. The small potatoes are then put into a similar pit and they are (the) left there for the winter.
    Arran chiefs and Kerr's pinks grow best in the district. About an acre of potatoes is grown each year on our farm. Starch was made out potatoes long ago.
