Long ago if a stranger came in he would do a bit of the churning because if he went out without doing so he would bring the butter with him. They used to bless the churn long before they would make the butter. They used to put a small coal under the churn and twist the handle of the churndash round the churn three times saying, "In-ainm an athair agus an Mhic agus an Spiorard Naomh Amen." Then when the butter was made they took a bit of it and threw it up on the side of the dresser. Then they used to grease the wheels of the cart with that butter. The people used to make a churning twice a week in the Summer long ago.
