They treated rheumatism with herbs, which they gathered from the hedges in the Summer time and boiled down to make a syrup.
Warts were supposed to be cured by dipping them into water found in a stone or in the hollow of a tree. It must be found when not looking for it. I think this was a superstitious custom. A great remedy for consumption was dandelions which the old people gathered and prepared in a special way.
A strong cup of tea was always a safe remedy for a headache.
Appendicitis was not even heard of amongst the old people. But when they complained of a pain in the side they applied a linseed poultice to it.
For a sprained ankle the remedy was to hold it against a strong current and then bandage it tightly.
