    Long in our loneliness sadly we wept for him,
    Pining in solitude, darksome and drear,
    Show now the love in our hearts that ne'er slept for him,
    Shout, till his captors shall tremble with fear.
    Sound the glad paean o'er ancient Tryconnell,
    The birthplace of heroes once happy and free,
    The glorious home of bold Red Hugh O'Donnell,
    Still fosters men noble and valiant as he.
    Flame the red torch o'er the waves of Lough Swilly,
    Light the bright bonfire in green Innishowen,
    Land of brave Cahir we honour thee truly,
    Give hail to a champion as true asthine own.
    And hapless Gweedore, rise with spirit unbroken
    He cometh again, your poor homes to defend,
    Leave no word of affection or feeling unspoken
    For you a great sorrow in meekness he bore,
    And heaven shall smile on and bless the fond meeting
    Of pastor and people in stricken Gweedore.
    Keep watch for the rise of the glorious morrow,
    When he shall appear like the sun in his might,
