  1. I stand beneath the shadow of an old familiar hill,
    And watch the rising harvest moon while the air is deadly still,
    And an odour keen assails me from the bosom of the night -
    Well I know that baleful odour - 'tis the fell-potato blight.
    Nature's danger-signal warns of the wrath that is to come,
    And a shadow falls around me like the shadow of a tomb,
    Bringing ghastly recollections of the tale of forty-seven,
    Of the death and dire destruction when a nation's heart was riven.
