About the time of Penal Laws there was mass served on Jon Kelly's hill of Ardbane.

About the time of the Penal Laws there was mass served on John Kelly's hill of Ardbane. Every morning the people of the district went to the hill and the priest read the mass. During the mass the priest had a man watching lest he should see anyone coming. First there was an altar of stones laid on the top of the hill on which the priest left the gospel book sitting. He had to start very early in the morning lest his enemies should take off his head. One was getting two pound for a priest's head that time. The stones of the altar are there yet.
