  1. Parish of Killaney, Carrickmacross;-
    One old man in the above parish some 30 years ago was a skilled riddle maker and regularly sold his wares, layered riddles and corn riddles on the street in Carrickmacross.
    The riddles were made entirely of young ash: the sieve portion was made of thinly ribboned ash. The art of splitting the ash for this purpose was highly skilled one. To-day there is not a single riddle maker in the whole area of South Monaghan; the introduction of cheap American mass-produced riddles was responsible for the wiping out of the age old craft of riddle making.
