  1. There was a hedge school in Rathmore Crossmolina. "Hedge school" was the local name. Sometimes the school work was carried on in the farmers houses but more usually it was done along the hedges.
    Robert Gill taught in one of these schools. He was a native of Rathore. The teachers who proceeded him lodged in the farmer's houses. Irish was not taught and the children who spoke Irish were punished very severely.Each scholar brought a certain sum of money each week to pay the teacher.
