    Once upon a time there was a widow's son whose father had died when he was seven years old.

    the kings gate. The king sang out that he had won half of the princess. Early next morning Jack arose and went to the giants' castle again and the second giant came out. The fight lasted all day long until night but Jack killed him at last and brought his head and hung it on the king's gate. The king was delighted when he saw that Jack had won, but he told him that he would have to kill one more giant and that he was hanging on a tree. Jack went up the next morning and this giant promised him that he would not kill him if he took him down from the tree. Jack took him down. When he got down the giant said that the best thing he could do was to hang Jack up in his place and he did so. The giant then went down to the castle and told the king that Jack was dead; and it was agreed that he
