  1. This district was in a very bad state during the famine years of eighteen forty six and forty seven. The year before the famine there was an abundance of potatoes and the year after eighteen forty six you would dig the whole day long before you could get your dinner. The potatoes were sown the same as they are sown now.
    The poor men who were working on direct labour only got fourpence a day and they were dying along the roadside with hunger. Some lived on raw turnips and cabbage and the people were poisoned eating
