  2. The cultivation of flax in Ireland about fifty years ago was a very profitable occupation. In those days the people laboured the flax with their own hands. There was a house built purposely for the drying of the flax. There was a large turf fire and over it was a shelf made of sally-rods. The flax was put on this shelf and someone had to stay with it all the time to keep it turned. It was then beetled with two rollers on the
