- We have one holy well in the parish of Ferns which is known as St. Aidan's Well' called Mogue's Well by the older people as it was St. Aidan who founded it. Many people have been cured of sore eyes by bathing them in this water, and others drink the water to cure toothache and it is found a good remedy. Anyone who visits this well to be cured of their complaints must leave a beads or some religouse emblem after him otherwise it is said he will not be cured.
A story is told that two saints in the form of fishes are in the well. The water is used for household purposes. One day a woman brought a can of water out of it and put it into a kettle to boil, but it never came to a boil. She took it back to the well and got more fresh water, and it boiled up just the same as any other water.
About five years ago some people tried to pollute this well and it was then enclosed by a concrete wall. A pump was then erected to convey the water and a jug is chained to the pump for drinking purposes.- Bailitheoir
