When a person would die there would be 'caoiners' that is women would be employed to cry over the corpse, a sort of mournful wale. Those caoiners were scarce and in great demand.
At wakes the Rosary was recited also the Office for the dead and other hymns were sung. The boys of the country would assemble together along with the prefect. Mr Patrick Devanny, Aughadowry a Dominician was the prefect for this locality after his death it fell through in this area.
