    They get sixpence or a shilling at every house and at night they have a dance. The children divide the money and they buy sweets.

    On New Years Eve they ring out the old year and ring in the new. On this night people say if they eat enough before they go to bed they will never want during the whole of the New Year. They would make a huge loaf and beat the door with it telling hunger and want to vanish from the neighbourhood. At midnight they go out to see how the wind is blowing. If it is a westerly wind they
