    In former days thatching was very common in this district but nowadays it is not practised as the modern houses are all slated. It was so popular in the ancient times, there was thatcher occupied in every townsland.
    It was a very useful trade as it kept a large number of people employed as well as the thatcher. The people had a big share of land tilled and the reed was got from the wheaten straw and the barley straw. Therefore it had to be switched for thatch and had to be done by the hand where now the wheat is threshed by the machine with far less labour than the
