   OLD SONGS
   Those ruined old walls, those grand old walls, in stately splendour stand.
   Their name historic ranks amongst the proudest in the land.
   For there it was that heroes fought and fell in freedom’s cause.
   In bygone days when Erin groaned ‘neath cruel English laws.

   This is the first verse of the famous poem the “Old Walls of Liscarroll”. It was written by O’Callaghan Gaynor and its theme explains its purpose. He was no doubt a poet belonging to the local school of patriots.

   As far as I know local poets who wrote in English were not very plentiful. Some old songs remain but their composers are not known. Some of these songs tell of famous characters for instance “Death of Patrick McCarthy” a local travelling man. Other tell of famous events while others are written in praise of the place in general. Take the following Stanza. The poet referring to Liscarroll continues.
   ’Tis there you’d see fine horses,
   Fine carriages and cars
   And gentlemen of Honour
   Come here from foreign parts.
   There’s a castle situated there
