  1. AN DÚN ARD
Highfort is about a mile from Liscarroll on the road to Mallow, and was another mansion of the Purcells. On the 11th March 1811 Mr. John Purcell (then an old man) and his daughter were the only residents, when an attempt of robbery was made by about twenty of the “Noonan Gang’ from Tullylease. The Noonans bore the sobriquet “Jackets” and were notorious for the daring robberies. As they attempted to enter by the dining room windows, Mr. Purcell with a carving knife picked up from the table, killed no less than five of the robbers and for his singular intrepidity on this occasion he was knighted and was ever after known as the “Knight of the Knife.
