Im' not as young as I used to be
My head's nigh gray, still your kind words weigh
Like lead in this throbbing breast o' me.
If I should take you I might forsake you
You know Im' odd in certain ways
And if I should leave you I know 'twould grieve you
And maybe shorten your living days.
And then our childer 'twould them bewilder
And leave them pining for their mother dear
While you in sorrow would watch each morrow
And grief & trouble your heart should sear."
Her voice then quivered, as these words she delivered
And with a most angelic air,
She sobbed on his breast as he lay at rest
Saying "none but the brave deserve the fair."
What followed after, the sound of laughter
    Prevented reaching the listener's ears
Suffice it to say, ere dawn of day
He had silenced all poor Marget's fears.
There'll be a marriage & in the carriage
The Carn Bard will take a seat
And John Mc.Ivor will spend a fiver
On whiskey punch & poteen neat.
