  1. Herbs are not utilized much in this part of the country. Nettles when boiled into broth are a remedy for measles and blood diseases. Dandelion is a cure for jaundice. Dandelions, nettles & chickweed are used as food for turkeys, pigs and chickens. Sorrel grows under the side of the hedges, it is eaten raw, in former years people used collect, wash it and make sandwiches with it.
    There were several old women around here a few years ago who would collect water-cress and eat it with salt & wheaten bread and a drink of sweet milk. They held it was the best food obtainable. I often saw them gather the water cress in the long summer evenings.
