  1. The Circular Charm
    The above is supposed to cure abortion in cattle. A certain man and his son used this charm in Cordal parish quite recently.
    The father and son left their own house and came back to it in a circle, the father carrying a bag of beef on his back, and the son following, never nearer than a distance of about 30 paces.
    While on route they kept up an uncanny buzz – questioning and answering – which seemed to be the language of the charm.
    People met them on the road and spoke to them. Before “crossing” into the fields the father put down the bag on the road, and walked around it eight times, blessing himself each time.
    They entered the fields at McMahons, passed through Dick McCarthys, Healys, Thompsons, Roches, and back home through Mahonys, having deposited the bag and its contents where three rivers meet.
    A week after Roches hay shed was blown
