- Rope-making.Long ago the people made their own ropes. They made them from rushes and bog-fir. First of all they gathered suitable rushes and hund them near the fire to dry. When they were dry they had a wooden mallet which they had for the purpose, and they hammered the rushes and softened them. Then they plaited the rushes, three-ply. They generally plaited them with their fingers but some people had a hook for the purpose of plaiting them. This is how the ropes from bog-fir were made:- They used to dig the bog-fir and dry it. When it was dry, they cut it into five or six pieces. They then cut it in strips about 1/5 of an inch thick. When they had this done they plaited it like the rushes.Every five or six neighbours gathered into some house and there they(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
