- Belhavel is my home district. It is situated in the parish of Killargue and the barony of Dromahair. There are two families and sixteen inhabitants. McGovern is the name of the two families. One of the houses is tiled and the other is thatched. There are no old people in it. My district got its name from the wife of Montgomery, the landlord. Her name was "Belle Hovel" and she lived on Bethavel rock. There is a lake on the north side of my district called Bethavel lake. It was called "Claon Lough" before it got the name Bethavel. There are two small islands in the lake and it is said that a mermaid lives in the lake and that she comes to the island every morning barefooted and combs her hair. Waterhorses also live in the lake and there was a man drowned in it by the name of John Steward.
