- Churning
We have a churn at home. It is not a churn that you twist round, it is a dash churn. It is three feet in height, the width of the bottom is 28 ins, and the width of the top is 25 ins. The various parts are called, the four hoops, the lid, the dash and the splash cup. there is no make on the top or bottom of the churn. the butter is made twice a week in Summer, and once a week in Winter. my mother and father usually do the churning. Strangers who come in during churning help by giving a "brash". This is by moving the dash upwards and downwards. The churning takes about a half an hour in summer, and an hour in winter.
