    During this period there lived in the townland of Lavey in an old house near the excising Hibernian Hall, a widow, named Peggy Cherry who had five grown-up daughters. They were ashamed to admit that they had not food, and the whole six died from hunger on the same day.
    In 1879 the potato crop failed again in this district. A grant was given by the government for the purpose of distributing Indian Meal among the needy. There were stations at various places in this district and the meal was given out at these stations, the amount varying according to the number in each family.
    When the Indian porridge was boiled, it was allowed to cool, after which hot water was poured on it. The family sat around the pot and ate the porridge on
