  1. Mr. Tom Rourke was born in the Island and he spent his young days in America. After a while he came home to Ireland. While he was away he learned how to compose songs and when he came home to Offaly he was called the "Local Poet." He wrote a great deal of songs namely -: Gunnan and his Goat, The Pig Fair of Ballycumber and Joe Horan's Grey-hound and a hare. He was recently living in a small thatched hut in the Island, but he died on the 25th of June 1938, but his fame spread throughout all Offaly.
