  1. Long ago the Irish people used to eat three meals a day. They were very early risers. They used to do what would be considered as a half day's work nowadays before their breakfast. They ate stirabout for their breakfast, and when meal was scarce the ate souns. Souns were made from mill seeds. They were put in a crock containing water, and were left steeping for a fortnight until it was sour, then it was strained and used for a drink.
They often prepared a meal called crowdy made of oat-meal and butter-milk. They had a few special feasts during the year. They had pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, Lashings of eggs on Easter Sunday, the first goose of the year on Michaelmas day, and colcannon with a ring in it on Hallow Eve.
