    A very common kind of fuel used in this district long ago was slack mixed with yellow clay and made into balls with water. These were put at the back of the open fire to get dry and hard. They burnt with a beautiful bright glow.
    People have also often gathered what they called "Scrass" off the Knockmealdown mountains, and brought home loads of it at a time; this is like moss but when dried was used to 'start' the fire instead of straw which was generally used.
