  1. This saying came from the droll story that when you hear the hens cackling after going to roost every night, they are saying to one another "Tomorrow morning we will go off to Scotland". When the morning comes, the hen runs out of the hen-house, full of their resolve to fly away to Scotland, but they are hungry and scratch for a bite or two before they start and one mouthful leads to another, and they keep on scratching and eating until the morning is gone. It is too late to start on our long journey now, they say, but tomorrow for sure we will make it.
