“There is a special art in kindling a fire in the open air.”
There is a special art in kindling a fire in the open air. You must pick the small faggots with care and avoid putting any of the soft green wood on until the fire is well ablaze. Otherwise you will soon be without a fire. Whenever I put a fresh piece of wood on the flames I used to close my eyes in order to find out if I could detect the various kinds of timber by their smell when burning. Every species of timber, oak, ash, holly, mountain ash, elder, yew. Pine has a smell of its own. A person skilled in such matters could tell which kind could be burning.- Bailitheoir
