In strolling through the country round,
Last spring I chanced one day.
The owner of Tormenter to meet upon the way.
And when he knew I’d wish to see, once more the famous mare,
He invited me to Cappagh-Lawn to spend the evening there,
Hospitably he feasted me, then took me to the stall,

I parted with my gracious host, as shades of evening fell.
Resolved within myself to keep, an eye upon Gazzelle.
    III

But when the race was over, Ah they taught to spell,
For in the country not a horse, was found to beat
