    Once upon a time there lived an old woman in Drumcarn.

    Once upon a time there lived an old woman in Drumcarn. She had two sons John and Pat and they were very poor and had not much to eat. This day Pat said I must go and seek my fortune. At first his mother would not let him go but he begged her so much that she let him go. Pat went on about a mile till he came to a fort. 'Begorra' he says I will look along here till I see could I get a crock of gold. He went about looking but could not find any. At last it became dark and Pat could not find his way out of the fort. At last Pat could find some tipping like a bird hopping her beak against a stone. Pat followed the tipping until at last he could find himself in a little house built of gold. Pat saw a little fellow sitting on a stool in a corner. He was surprised to see such an ugly looking fellow pretending to be a shoemaker. Pat spoke to him and said you have a fine job if you keep it. The little fellow said I have. He told Pat to get him some leather. Pat got him the leather and he thanked him. Then he told Pat to take as
