    built, the name was subsequently altered to Kingscourt, in honour of the event commemorating the holding of a court of Provincian Kings at one of the occasional residences of Murchard O'Melaghlin, under the Presidency of King James, prior to his march to the Boyne.
    The town consists of one long straggling street containing some well-built houses, some of which have been re-built and renovated during the last forty years. Some are slated others thatched. More than a century ago, there was a clause in the lease made by the landlords, prohibiting the erection of houses, unless the door porches and window-facings were built with cut stone, and it is interesting to observe the number that was built in this manner. Early dates and initials of landlords are also to be seen on the stones placed in the walls of some houses, viz. I.C. (Isaac Clifford) 1776, W.B. (W. Barnum) 1773, etc.
    In the fourteenth century, the Bounty of Cavan was known as "Breffni,"
