- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)In the Autumn when the potatoes are ripe they dig them. So nearly all the farmers dig the potatoes with a spade. Some of them dig them with a potato digger. The potato digger leaves a lot of the potatoes in the ground. The woman of the house and the children pick the potatoes. The woman picks the big ones and the children pick the "poreens" after her. The big ones are put in a pit of their own and the "poreens" in another pit. The pit is covered first with straw or rushes and then they put a foot of clay on the top of the straw. They are left there in the pit until January or February and then they are brought into the barn.
