- About a mile and a half from Eighter house Virginia Co. Cavan stands the old ruins of what people believe to have been a hedge-school. In the Winter when the weather was cold and wet lessons were taught indoors, but as long as the bright days of Summer lasted all work was done outside along the hedges.
Irish was taught in them and the children had to speak it at play time. They wrote on slates and as time went by they began to use pens made with quills.
