In olden times the people used to eat four meals in the day and work for fourteen hours each day from six o'clock in the morning until eight at night. They would work for two or three hours in the morning before having food. Then they would go into the house and eat porrage and "sowans". "Sowans" is water and seeds of oats mixed in a cruck until it it white like milk. After that meal, they would go out again and work until one o'clock. They would go in again and take potatoes and "sowans" and salt. The wife would place a "lusud" of potatoes on a stool in the middle of the floor and they wold sit round it and they would peel the potatoes with their fingers. A "lusud" is a round ring of wire platted through with salleys. They would go out and work until five o'clock. Then they would get "sowans" and bread. The bread would be made of oat-meal and potatoes. At they would go in and take porrage and "sowans"
