    The bill was made up and Pat said he was 1/2d short in the payment and he reduced the quantity to meet the price.
    In later years buying and selling took place after mass on Sundays. Butter and eggs were bartered for groceries. Boys and girls went to work for goods received by their parents.
    The words ''tick'' and ''boot'' were in common use. A dealer exchanging an article for a better one would usually give something else-either in money or value as ''boot'' in addition to the article exchanged.
