the turf crop was lost and many fields of potatoes were not worth digging. The small farmers and even farmers in comfortable circumstances suffered severely.
In connection with the food scarcity of 1879 boilers were set up in different townlands. Indian meal porridge was cooked in them. There was one at the mill in Swanlinbar village. Three cans full of porridge were distributed each week families who were in need and the woman who stirred the porridge got an extra can as payment.
