1. The Potato Crop

   Potatoes are grown on our farm. We sow about 3/4 of an acre every year. The amount never varies. My father always prepares the ground. The potatoes are sown in drills. When turning up the soil a plough is used. In olden times spades were used. The potatoes are prepared in the following way; the fair sized potatoes are picked, and cut between the buds, so as to have about three eyes on each seed. Then they are left about a day to dry up. When sowing potatoes neighbours help each other. In about a month after the seeds being sowed the tops of the drills are broken off either with a fork or chain-harrow. Then they are grubbed this is done to loosen the weeds, so that they will be more easy wed. They are then wed and after a few days the weeds are carried away. When this is done the clay is put up to them again.
