- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)it was a farmer's place. This was done in honour of St. Martin. Some people said it kept away sickness from amongst the fowl and other things about the farm. The people ate the cock then, some people used give away the cock but it is not usual. The old people believed that St. Martin went around on a white horse the night of November 11th to see if the blood was drawn outside every house. An old saying they had about St. Martin Day was : "St. Martin put the cold stone in the water and St. Patrick took it out." That means that the weather begins to get cold around St. Martin's Day and it begins to get warm around St. Patrick's day.(Mrs Nolan, Ballyshancaragh, Kildavin)
