People used to make a great store of tallow candles in the summer so that they would last the whole winter
It is said that the tallow candles showed a very bright and clean light.
But of course as the tallow candles were not very big they did not last longer than a quarter of an hour. Tallow candles were made in nearly every house; but there were some people who made candles and sold them.
There was another kind of light called a snob. It was made from a piece of clean calico twisted tight and dipped in melted resin. But this light was a lot smokier than the tallow candle.
