  2. Ballycon. This townland starts at Esker school and ends at Judges on the road to Daingean. There are ten families in this district and 38 people in all. Five of the houses are thatched, 4 slated and one roofed with sheet iron. Bermingham and Dempsey are the most common names. The proper name of the townland is Battle Conn, called after a battle fought here by Conn of the Hundred Battles.
    Three people- Mrs Prendergast, Miss Dempsey and Mrs Shortt, (Ballycon Daingean, Offaly) are over 70. None of them speak Irish, but they can tell English stories. Houses were more numerous long ago. The people emigrated
