As in other districts the belief in butter-stealing was very firmly ingrafted in the people of this district. According to Mr. Sunderland and others, an old woman (whom I knew) lived in Ballycanew She had a few acres of land and kept three cows. These gave her more butter than neighbouring farmers could get from twenty cows, and for years the neighbours could not understand it. It was at last discovered that she used to leave her home secretly some time after midnight. She was then followed.
