1. Old Schools - Hedge School at Ballyvaldon

   

   Roinn Roinn Postáil

   At Ballyvaldon Cross Roads about 200 yards from Ballyvaldon N.S. there was a Hedge School. The masters name was Alec Stuart and I myself knew his daughter who had nurse children attending Bvaldon N.School
   Mr Belvin attended this school when very young. He subsequently attended the present National School. He mentions three books in use at this "hedge" school:
   "The Primer" "Read' a made Aisy" + a Spelling book.
   The subjects were Reading (English) and writing.
   Great attention was given to writing. He does not remember any other subjects being taught. Pens + ink were used + pencils + slate for the juniors.
   The pupils (mixed) sat on seats all round the little school with the writing class at work on planks laid on boxes
   The masters desk was a box with a stool.
   In summer they adjourned to the open field and lay down to their work. There was no B.B . The poor pupils paid 1d per week
