   There were many peculiar customs carried out during our parents time with regard to wakes and Funerals. One of them, and which has not long disappeared, is that about twenty minutes before the corpse leaves the house twelve candles were lighted and placed in a basin of clay. Those were not extinguished until the funeral was a good distance on the road and the person that puts them out keeps the last one and it is said that there is a cure in it.

   Another one which was the custom up to about twenty years ago is that when a funeral passes a cross road it stops and some person recites the Deprofundis and this was done at every cross roads it passed. When it reached the graveyard the corpse was carried all around it while the Deprofundis was recited and the it was placed in the grave.

   It was the custom up to about ninety years ago for the relatives of a dead person to keep watch over
