Each day he gave a lecture on etiquette and told them how to behave going home from school and returning back next morning. They wrote with the quills of geese made suitable by the Master's razor. The seats were black oak beams laid on big stones around the walls and hewn flat by a broad-axe. He got each year an old piper named Billy Clinton and held a kind of festival called a "Groggery" for the pupils and some of the neighbours. There were some money made up for the Master in this way to make up for his bad pay.
